What does Bittermilk No. 3 taste like?

It's a smoky twist on a classic whiskey sour — honey smoked over whiskey barrel wood gives it depth, while bitter orange peel and lemon keep it slightly tart. Expect a sweet-and-sour, complex, smoky sip.

How do I mix a drink with it?

Shake equal parts Bittermilk No. 3 and a non-alcoholic spirit with plenty of ice, then strain into a coupe glass. Zero-proof bourbon like Spiritless Kentucky 74 or BARE Zero Proof works well, and Gnista Barreled Oak kicks up the smoke for a more autumnal version.

Can I use it for anything besides a whiskey sour?

Yes — swap in ISH Mexican Agave Spirit instead of a zero-proof bourbon and you've got a slightly smoky Honey Margarita.

Who makes Bittermilk and where are they located?

Bittermilk is made by Bittermilk Bottling Co. in Charleston, South Carolina. Husband-and-wife team Joe and MariElena Raya started the line in 2013 out of The Gin Joint, their craft cocktail bar in downtown Charleston, after regulars kept asking how to recreate the drinks at home. The company still handcrafts and bottles its mixers in the Charleston area and has announced a second Lowcountry production facility in Ravenel, SC.
